first 600 mile service questions. Please help.

Hello guys,
I am new here and just picked up a new 2014 C600 last week. I am at 600 miles and need the first service done. I was going to take it to the dealer but they want $395 to do the service. I looked on this site and everyone seems to pay less. I have owned and worked on bikes my whole life so I am sure I can service it. I looked what needs to be done and have a couple of questions.

1) I understand you drain the oil, pull the filter and also pull the screen out of the side to clean it. I also see replace oil pickup pipe #11428531124
What is this? Looks kinda like the screen but different?

2) Check chain sag. I can't find anywhere about how to adjust or check the chain? Whats the deal?

3) When I put the key on it just says maintenance 100 miles. It said that since new. I guess it will just stay like that and not hurt anything right? Or will another maintenance light come on?

4) Does anyone run the synthetic Rotella T6? It has the proper ratings but it is 15W40 and not 15W50 like BMW wants.

5) No recall for the timing chain tensioner in the US? My dealer didn't say anything.

Thanks :)

They had the timing chain tensioner recall in the US, along with OTHERS. Your dealer needs to get with it.

10-40 should be fine. It's when you use one of those low-friction 0W-30 and 5W-30 oils that you can screw things up. Much above 80 degrees they thin WAY out. And, as a multi-grade, they are basically NOT a 30wt oil, but a straight 0wt (WATER!) or 5wt with added viscosity stabilizers to help it act LIKE a 30wt at higher temps. Those stabilizers break down before your the typical 6,000 mile (auto) oil change interval, and you revert to a straight 0 or 5wt oil. That is a BAD thing.

When I twisted wrenches years ago, they started to put those oils in the Sheriffs Department's Crown Victorias, with the 4.6 liter SOHC V-8. We changed them out to 20W-50 for police use. Then they held together...

2014 model might not need the timing chain recall. You can go to the NHTSA.GOV website and check your bike by VIN to see if it's applicable to you. There is also a BMW service bulletin out there currently that is changing out the multi-function switches (at no charge) so that's a reason to bring it to them. Another bulletin/recall for defective batteries that is VIN, not model-specific.

Also, if they know what they are doing (and I'm yet to be convinced that BMW dealers know enough about these scooters to know what they're doing), they need to update the software.

I looked at my 600 mile invoice. Essentially an oil change for $142. But it's the software updates and recall work that makes it a required visit in my opinion. Not to mention preserving the 3-year warranty.

Here's a link to the WebBikeWorld site's posting of the 600-mile service checklist. Rick, the owner of the site, has posted a treasure trove of great info about these bikes. Check it out.

I researched the timing chain tensioner. My scooter was built 3-2014. The recall is for scooters 2-2014 or older. I also put the vin number in and it says no recall. They did order me a new housing for the heated seat button , it had some kind of recall?

They can't void your warranty for servicing your own machine.

Some dealers really try to make their money on scheduled maintenance. My dealer here in Medford charged me $125 for the 600 mile check. No wonder BMW owners come from far and wide to our local dealer. I also helps that the owner of the dealership has a GT of his own.

Okay so here is the response about the oil pickup pipe, the schedule says to replace the strainer beside the front oil intake pipe (not replace the intake pipe)

i took my 2014 650 in for the 600 mile warrenty service..the dealer i bought it from couldnt get me in for two weeks and wanted $395 for the service. another bmw dealer 40 miles away charged me 200 and got me right in..the dealer i bought my scooter from is a mega store, the dealer that serviced my bike(and happy with) is alot smaller and i thought nicer to deal with even though i didnt buy my scoot from them

I bought my 2014 c650 in March of 2014 so I am assuming it was made prior to March of last year, but when I put my VIN# in I get nothing noting a recall? Does this make sense?

There are "Recalls," and then there are "Recalls." Not all service-related issues are registered with the NHTSA. Only the serious, safety-related issues end up in the data base.

Thanks Jaime, that makes sense. Not sure if I should be concerned about any of the replacements I've read about here like the chain tensioner etc. I have had nothing replaced other than the defective water pump.

Pigpenracing - thanks for the reply. I bought the bike on March 14th of last year so I have to suspect it was built at least a few weeks prior if not much earlier??? I did call the BMW main number today and gave them my VIN and they indicated that there were no recalls for my bike indicated? I'm really wondering if it's really okay or not. Have 4500 miles on the bike at this point.

Best to all!!

I think the bikes that have problems are really noisy when they start up from the loose timing chain slapping around. If yours runs smooth and quiet on a cold startup I think you are good.
