Hello from Idaho

Hi Everyone,

I visited this forum for the first time today and joined right away. I have been riding a Yamaha Vino 125 that I bought new in 2006 and currently have about 8200 miles on it. I have decided I'll stick with it until I reach the 10,000 mile mark and then look into a C650 GT. I enjoy my Yamaha a great deal and have found it to be solid, reliable little machine over the years. The biggest disadvantage I've found is our town is rather hilly and with me checking in at 6'1" and 275 pounds I'm unable to maintain posted speed limits on the hills. I've found and mostly stick to less difficult routes that the scooter can handle as a compromise.

I looked at a 650 at our local dealer and have sat on it, taken it off and back on the center stand and it seems to be a good fit for me size-wise. I didn't test drive it as I knew I was a ways off on buying one. I've been reading all I can find about them and the WebBikeWorld blog led me here. I haven't had a chance to really go through the posts but hope the early issues I read about concerning stalling and surging have been worked out.

Anyway, I look forward to browsing the posts and am excited to be joining your community.

I agree. I just traded in my first scoot in January for the 650GT. The old scoot, a Honda SH150i had about 9K mileage, was a great bike to learn motorized two-wheeling on, and I really loved it. It did everything I asked, but after 3 seasons, I knew I had outgrown it. Even though it would top 60 mph, I didn't feel safe at that speed. So like you I stuck to the side roads at more modest speeds. Saw the 650GT at a show in January and was intimidated by its size compared to the Sh150. Mr brother-in-law who rides a Wing, thought it looked like his next bike, the R1200RT, and pushed me to find out more. Went to a dealer who handed me the key and said "go for a ride". I thought that this bike, at 4x the horse and over 2x the weight of the Honda, would be "too much bike" to ride. Within 5 minutes, I knew it was mine.

Yes, there have been stalling issues (software update to correct them), and a couple of recalls. But as has been said on this and other forums, growing pains for a new product. The 3 year warranty should give you peace of mind. I was hesitant to buy it because, like you, I had read "stuff". And it's had to earn my trust over the 2,000 miles we've been together. Not 100% there yet but it's getting there. Take it for a test ride. You won't look back, or wait to hit 10k on your current ride. Thought I'd miss my Honda. Not so much :) Welcome to the club.

Should have mentioned that WebBikeWorld also started a Google+ forum, called "BMW Scooters" Lots of good people and information there too. One of the newest members had the same questions/hesitancy about purchasing, just in the past few days. I think several of the members here also belong to the Google + one as well.
