Helmets

So, we have this 60+hp machine under us. We can go anywhere and can get there fast... or slow and relaxed. However we decide to do it, what do we have have on our noggin? Here's mine....with the gas cover as an ornament (ok, I don't really have the ornament, but it is kinda Buckeye scarlet and gray).

I use a Nolan N44. Superb visibility similar to an open face helmet, but full face protection. I was thinking about getting a Schuberth C3 Pro North America edition, but I really can't justify spending the money. My Nolan is getting the job done.

I got the Schuberth C3 Pro after owning a C3 Concept. It is dramatically improved from earlier versions. Much more stable in wind and quieter.

I have the Nolan N43e Trilogy. I wanted to like the N44, but I just find the thing too "weird" looking for me. Schuberth is just plain NUTS with their pricing. For the price of a C3, I was able to get an N103 WITH bluetooth accessory. The other reason I haven't gotten the N44 is that I'd have to get a whole new bluetooth setup for it, as I wouldn't be able to transfer the one I've got now over to that helmet (as I was able to do when I got the N43e Trilogy after the N103).

The other thing that bugs me about the N44 is that it doesn't fit under the seat in the c600. You have to take the chin guard off. Not a big deal, but I really wanted to just plop it in under the seat. The helmet is kind of long.

Owned many hats and none of them did what I wanted, three years ago at the Moto GP in Indy I had an Arai Corsair-V custom fit. Paid a lot of money for it but never looked back, would do it again. This hat does everything I have ever wanted.

Helmets are a personal matter. Everyone with a head will have their own opinion regarding what works best for them. The only thing I care about is the DOT or ECE certification, and whether or not it is comfortable. Since I wear ear plugs all the time, noise isn't an issue. I also like being able to fit a headset into the helmet, and in the past that has never worked out well for me with any helmet from Arai. If you don't care about headsets, then it is hard to beat Arai for comfort and fit. The only other thing working against Arai is that I've gotten spoiled by having a drop-down sun shield (not available) and I do prefer modular helmets over pure full-face or open-face helmets. That and Arai, like Schuberth, is damned EXPEN$IVE!!

For me, the modular ones are just heavier and noisier, but I ALSO MISS the drop-down sun shield. My emergency work-around when I'm faced with driving into the setting sun is my emergency roll of PVC electrical tape. I just tape over the top 1/3 of my glasses and it's all good.

The weight of the modular helmets don't bother me. I spent a lot of time in the gym working on the "pencil neck" God gave me at birth...

Obviously, safety is the most important thing when buying a helmet. I just bought my C600 about two weeks ago and this is my biggest/fastest PTW I've ever owned. I'm coming from a Vespa 250 GTS.

I know certain styles of helmets go with certain styles of riding... Sport bikes, Harleys, cruisers, scooters. They all can reach 50mph+.

I've found a helmet that fits my "scooter" look and my C600 look. I ended up getting the Shark Evo-line helmet. It's a full face and an open face helmet... Best of both worlds. I've been happy with it so far.

Even though a full face helmet is the safest, it looks funny on a small frame scooter.

In cold weather I wear a HJC modular as does the wife. We use the Sena Bluetooth for an intercom, link to my phone and as a link to my CB. Just because I sold my last GW1800 doesn't mean I don't want to be able to communicate with my friends who're still on the big bikes. The Sena rig and my portable CB is quite handy because I can move it between the GT and my K1100. Most of the time I wear my Bell Mag8 3/4 helmet which also has a mount and is wired for the Sena. The 3/4 helmet works best for communication because it's a lot quieter.

My HJC SYMAX-II modular was what I used before the SHOEI Qwest. It was convenient, but was heavy, twisted my head in the slipstream if I turned it at ALL, and was DEAFENING over 60-70mph, even with earplugs. The SHOEI fixed all those shortcomings, and I found it on sale for 60% off!! After the upgrade, I would have bought it again, even at full price...
