I am keen to buy a C650GT

Hi all my first post.
I have been talking to a UK Motorrad dealer about buying a new 650gt. He has very much put me off as he says they are unreliable, expensive to maintain and plagued with recall stuff.
I was quite surprised as I was feeling positive about my purchase. To all you owners, is there any basis for their comments? Or are you all content with your purchase?

Almost 18K miles on mine. All issues were minor and easily corrected (and I'd expect no less from a first-year model anyway). Why the hell would a dealer try to shoot his own foot unless he's got a bigger incentive to move something else instead?

I would hardly call a couple of minor issues like the side stand switch and the cam tensioner recalls a "plague" sounds like he doesn't actually have one on the floor to sell.
Maintenance is no different than any other maxi scooter. BMW have a great warranty and roadside assistance so buy it and enjoy.

Are you kidding us, these scoots rock. Have had a brief 3000 mile ownership so far and love mine. Find a smarter dealer, one that wants to sell bikes.

I'd buy one again. I've got a '13. Whatever recalls or things it needed were done at service so it has been a 100% seamless experience for me. Can't imagine "unreliable, expensive to maintain and plagued with recall stuff" as relating to the bike I have. He must mean something else.

No problems for me either at 5,000 miles. It did get the cam tensioner recall, handlebar replacement and an update on the software but I wasn't having any problems before those were done. I've owned two Silverwing 600s, a Burgman 650 and now this C650GT besides many motorcycles. Of the three maxi scooters I wouldn't trade my GT for any other I've ridden or seen. In fact I like the GT so much that I sold my pristine BMW K1100LT and now ride the GT exclusively. Just today I rode 125 miles for lunch, over Siskyou Pass in 90F temperature. The bike's cooling fan never needed to come on climbing up an over the 4000' pass at 65-70mph in the heat. According to the bike's computer the GT got almost 60mpg on the ride which isn't bad at all for such a heavy scooter. Love this bike.

Hi Bottleofred

What part of London are you?

As above comments, I can't believe a dealer would say that.....unless it was a Yamaha dealer ;)
Maybe he was angling to sell you another model?

I can't offer any real life opinions as I now own a C600 and only done 200 miles so far but it's done 6400 miles as a dealer-demo and still runs like a dream. For what it's worth, I bought it from Marshall Grimsby BMW who have so far given one of the best dealer services I've ever experienced.

I'm in Lewisham SE13 so if you're nearby, pop in for a cuppa and a poke round the C600.

Good luck - I'm new here, but you're in good company on this forum.

Cheers, Hilton

Actually, just thinking about it; maybe the 'sales'man has been spending too much time on the Maxi-Muppets forum as what he said seems like the mantra on there?

It seems you just need to mention the name 'BMW' and you'll incur a torrent of negativity......mostly from people who've never ridden one!

Or maybe his boss has just given him notice....

Thanks very much for all the great replies. I am 1.81m tall and found the sport and evolution a bit cramped I have yet to sit on a GT but have been told that it is a bit longer and roomier for longer legs. Those with GT's dies this make any sense. Thanks again for your replies.

I am the same height and found the GT a much better fit, the bars are a little higher and feels less cramped.

Well I am pleased to say that I have finally gone for it. I have managed to find an 18 month old 650GT with only 498 miles on the clock. I am picking it up tomorrow and am quire excited at the thought. Great deal from the very same doubting dealer. All good and looking forward to the first ride as an owner. Will report back in due course.

Nice one Bottleofred.
Glad you made your mind up & look forward to hearing how it goes.
For what it's worth, if anything did go wrong, the experience I've just had with Motorrad backup has made me very glad I chose BMW.
Text book brilliant customer service.
Have fun:D

Hopefully you will have a great experience and a lot of fun. I have almost 31,000 miles on my 2013 and it has never let me down. A few minor irritations, but mostly because of the dealer's unfamiliarity with 'scooters' . . . they have gone to great effort to make things right. Have fun! So, what color?

You should have gotten a great dealer that put the bad mouth on the vehicle, after all you took this pile of junk off his hands. Enjoy mine's now at 7000+ and doing just what its supposed to do, run like a BMW. It's so good I ended up selling my beautiful '95 K1100LT. I decided the GT just does the job better for most of my riding, it's more comfortable and is handier around town than any motorcycles I've ever owned. Still good on the freeways too.
