Mysterious metal object on C600

Located behind the front right panel next to the fuses, attached to the glovebox hinge.
"Footboard Snap Lock" says the label - some sort of tool needed for dismantling the bodywork perhaps?
If so strange that it's supplied attached to every C600 and not just included in the tool kit.
Nothing about it in the owner's manual, far as I can see.

Interesting, but if it was a tool I wouldn't think it would be attached with screws.

I see there is a part number on it, (it is blurry) if you take the number to the dealer he could tell you or you can find the part online somewhere.

Looks like this recall had something to do with it.

2012-12-04 (Published by NHTSA on 2012-12-04)
Recall Summary: BMW is recalling certain model year 2013 C600 Sport Maxi-Scooters manufactured August 7, 2012, through November 20, 2012. The fasteners on the front side trim panels may have insufficient strength to retain the panels at high speeds.
Hazard: If the panel separates it could interfere with riding and handling of the scooter and increase the risk of a crash. The panel could also become a hazard for other road users.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will reattach the left and right front side trim panels with stronger "snap-lock" fasteners. The recall began on January 10, 2013. Owners may call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at [/B][email protected].
Additional Info: Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Had another look and looks like SteveADV is right - the plate is related to keeping the side fairings in place, but not in the way you might think.
Their purpose (there's one on the other side too) appears to be to stiffen the bodywork in the vicinity of the existing pop-on connectors, so they have better chance of "docking" properly when you're reattaching the panels.

Confirmation of the part number: 4 664 636.9 01A
A curiously shaped piece of metal for the job it's doing, kinda looks like they used whatever component they had in stock that was approximately the right shape.
