New models on the horizon

Timing tensioner service done and the techs mention new bikes in the coming years are slated to include more entry level BMWs like a 400cc scooter. They also mentioned that the sport is not going to be imported in favor of the GT and the electric. So snap up those Sports whilst they're still available.

I don't see them selling many of those eScooters. Not at the insane pricing they're looking for, anyway. I'd much rather go with a Zero or a Brammo if I were thinking electric. Those things at least have some decent range and performance for the money they're asking.

Yeah, I don't think the electric version is going to get many takers. Electric motorcycles while cool, don't make any sense to me. it isn't like gas is that expensive for a motorcycle. I hope BMW improves their marketing.

If the Zero came down in price, I could see it for me. It can easily do 70-75 mph while getting roughly 60-70 miles on a charge at that speed (farther if you slow it down some). That's PERFECT for my commute (roughly 45 miles round trip on the highway). Park it in the garage and plug it in overnight and I'm ready to go in the morning.

No gas, no oil changes, no tune-ups, no spark plugs, no valves... But even with the tax break, there's no economic sense to me at the current price.

Knowing that I was to be in Orlando FL one afternoon with nothing scheduled, I went through the factory website ZERO MOTORCYCLES ? The Electric Motorcycle Company - Official Site and requested a test ride at Orlando Yamaha Kawasaki. The sales staff was extremely accommodating and allowed me to ride their Zero SR demo.

Having ridden 50 plus years on the street, raced both two and four strokes with AMA, WERA and AHRMA, on the road, track and dirt, I was really impressed with the scoot. Power comes on STRONG, maybe enough to raise the front end. But, more importantly, the power is seamless, no flat spots, the throttle is linear, like the volume control with potentiometer input. It's a different sensation, no exhaust noise, gobs of torque, and respectful handling at my above leisurely riding in "demo" mode.

For me, range isn't a factor as I commute 20 to 40 miles a day, sometimes seven days a week.

However, two "cons" for me.

1. storage, my current commuter vehicle is a 2009 Aprilla Scarebeo 500 ie

and with underseat and top box storage, I can haul helmet, gym bag, groceries, even two 12 packs of brew.

2. cost, nearly $15,000 is a bit much.

I agree with you Jamie, the real benefit right now to electric is the near zero maintenance. Range is not that great but it's certainly getting better. Somehow, the fiat e seems to be selling despite the short range. So it'll work for some. I'm thinking a 400cc bike would be great for my missus. That's the one I'm interested in, as long as it's got a low enough seat height and isn't too tubby in the weight department.

I just wish scooters would catch on here in the US more. Odd that the city people here don't go for them, I guess it's the Harley marketing that makes most conformist riders the dress up like pirates and ride their 1950s bikes.

I have owned two SYMs, the last one was the 400i. It was a pretty good scooter for the price but it didn't come anywhere near the BMW for ride, class or satisfaction!

In heads-up reviews and road tests, the Xciting 400i ABS beat out the Yamaha Xmax400, SYM 400i, Piaggio X-350, basically everything in its class. It had the best Appearance, Handling, Braking, Acceleration, Top Speed and was the lightest scoot. Also, it is the ONLY one with a Triple Tree front fork set-up, like the C600. The rest have just the typical scooter steering set-up. It's the #1 seller in Spain!

Kymco has manufactured a lot of stuff for big time companies that don't advertise that they have used other manufacturers to make parts for them. Even though they technically a Chinese Co. They have very high standards hense they have made parts etc. For Honda BMW Yahama Piaggio group and other well known companies

Is it true that kymco co was started by Honda?

There was a serious relationship with Honda for 30 years during which time Kymco made parts for Honda (starting in the '60s). Our scooters are not the first bikes Kymco has produced for BMW according to the German's specs....Just the best.:)

FYI....It is likely the Honda/Kymco relationship will deepen now in as much as Taiwan and Japan are joined at the hip vs China economically. Not a bad thing, IMO.
