Parking brake

Changing out parking brake pads as non functioning and looked like inner pad was worn. Replacement pads look nothing like OEM, online catalogs all show similar small pads and looks like there was a break in part numbers in 2014 but all images show smaller pads. Any ideas?

What model? What year? How many miles? What's the manufacturer and part number of the replacement pads?

I have a 2014 C650GT USA model. About 14K miles. I purchased EBC SFA257/2 brake pads which most sources indicate will fit. From my research so far it looks like EBC SFA083 are the pads that are being used in mine. So far these seem to be available from UK and Germany only.

I have not heard back from 2 BMW dealers I sent parts requests to yet ?!?@&$#?!

Have you contacted the folks at JC Motors? They were awesome helping me with my last EBC purchase. The contact I worked with is Verne Ochangco ([email protected]).

I also look at the parts fische at MAX BMW and it definitely looks odd. The part number is:

34 21 8 526 263 SET: SET OF BRAKE PADS, PARKING BRAKE (to 01/14)

but the picture looks like the new (incorrect) set you received.

Setting all that aside, it's curious you'd need a replacement parking brake unless it was really mis-adjusted, causing it to wear. I have 55k miles on mine and have plenty of material left. Granted, I rarely use the side stand but there's no reason for any significant wear.

davidh,

I spoke with my local dealer and sent them a photos and they were sure they could get me the right part regardless of what the part looked like in the catalog, same as MAX BMW fische. I sent them a photo and I believe he looked at it.

The part is on order but it has to come from Germany I am told. I am pretty sure the SFA083 part from EBC is correct as well but that needs to come from UK or Germany as well, could not find stock in USA.

I was surprised it was worn out as well. I am guessing it was mis-adjusted. I know I gave the adjusting bolt a few turns last year when it was not holding but it didn’t seem to work for long and it hasn’t worked for some time so not sure if it was due to my turning the adjuster or if it was already gone.

Somehow it has to be dragging on the inside to wear that pad out as the inner pad was like new.

I’ll have to see when the part arrives.

Well I ordered from both BMW and an eBay seller from Germany selling EBC pads and the EBC pads arrived yesterday. Installed tonight and they were the correct fit. SFA83/2 Cleaned everything up and removed entire caliper and checked function, all seemed good, reinstalled and adjusted per service manual. Hopefully these don’t wear out like OEM set, more wear on inner parking brake pad than any other pad is not right.

Dragging pads are usually caused by one of two causes. Overly snug adjustment or a stuck caliper. Calipers have to be free to move a bit to equalize pressure on the pads, once released they must be free to move side to side a bit. That one in your photo looks like it was held against the disk when the kick stand was retracted. How does it feel when you hold the pads on and move the kick stand. It's also possible something like a small stone got under that worn pad and kept it against the disk.
I adjust my parking brake by feel, loosen it so the bike will move with the parking kick stand down, then repeat as you adjust the cable tension until the bike resists moving. Then test it with the bike on the center stand, with the kick stand up there sholdn't be much drag on the rear wheel when hand turned; kick stand down and the wheel should resist any turning. My bike has a bit more than 12,000 miles and the parking breaks look nearly new, very little wear at all. Yet they hold the bike against pushing. Two people could push it a short distance but it would take a lot of effort. The parking brake isn't designed to hold against the effort of a thief or two pushing but merely to keep the bike from rolling off the sidestand when parking nose down on a slope.

I had noticed sometime early in the year the parking brake was not holding but never took the time to re-adjust. I have adjusted it several times in a manner similar to you. When I put new pads on the rear and inspected the parking brake pads I saw the irregular wear. When I replaced the pads I removed the caliper, cleaned it off with brake clean and checked for smooth operation and all seems well. Reassembled and adjusted to moves freely with stand up and grabs lightly with stand down. No sure what happened but I'm going to keep an eye on the adjustment and wear.

Good job and thanks for the update on the correct part! I'm sure I'll come to need it at some point.

There's a special way to adjust the parking brake. First you adjust the cable, with the side stand retracted so that distance "A" is 56mm, then you slacken the locknut (near the top of the big arrow in this photo) and adjust the centre screw until the brake is working correctly. Finally retighten the locknut. BMW have a special gadget that allows you to check the braking torque, but in the absence of this I go by trial and error. Works for me.
