Punctured Tire Traveling at 75 mph - BEEMER RDC WARNING

Hey All,

I just wanted to share what happened to me on my way home from 200 mile ride in Southeastern San Deigo County. The ride was awesome...!

On my way home, roughly 20 miles away from home, I was riding on the interstate highway 15 cruising along with traffic (75MPH) enjoying the ride, when the instrument panel started blinking the orange triangle caution. I looked more closely and noticed the RDC warning and the rear tire at 00 PSI.

At first, I thought sensor error, as I could not feel any difference in the way the Beemer handled. I slowed a bit to 60 MPH and still could not feel anything, I thought best to pull over to check it out, rode into the shoulder and still could not feel anything. At roughly 15 MPH, the rear end started to wobble hard until I came to a full stop breaking slowly.

Sure enough, the tire was totally flat. I saw the puncture on the tire.

I can't help but think; without the sensor warning giving me enough time to slow down, I probably would have taken a nasty spill freeway...

I LOVE MY C600 SPORT, and IT LOVE's ME BACK!!!!

I got a flat back in December and watched the rdc kept counting down and at 26psi is when the dash starts flashing and the triangle hazard comes on

Interesting, I wonder if it was centripetal force holding the tire up until the lower speed reduced the force enough for the tire to collapse. These smaller wheels do spin pretty fast.

Now that's some trustworthy technology! Glad you're okay. It was a wise move to believe the warnings.

Ooooh, someone paid attention in Physics class!

Except it is technically "momentum" that holds the tire up. Centripetal force is the force pulling the tire in towards the hub. Difficult to picture when you're talking about a tire... easier to imagine with a weight on the end of a piece of string.

In the latter case, the string represents the centripetal force pulling the weight inwards as you twirl the weight around in a circle. Were it not for centripetal force, momentum would take the weight out away from you in a straight line.

All this, of course, is Junior High School science explaining why there is no such thing as "Centrifugal Force." ;)

Indeed it is actually momentum that develops centripetal force since an object cannot accelerate in a circular motion without centripetal force. Without centripetal force the surface of the tire would have to go in a straight line which would immediately void the warranty. I did have a steel belted radial tire once in which the momentum was greater than the centripetal force of the tire material could withstand. It was interested to examine the steel belt's interesting construction without the rubber and fabric tread over it.
