I was wearing gear so no injuries at all. Unfortunately, my 2025 C 400 GT is totaled. BMW dealership repair quote is almost 20k CAD. I guess BMW does have a reputation being expensive to repair. I'm still surprised this amount of damage is possible, I was only going 15mph(25km/h). Are scooters/motorcycles just easier to be totaled, or is this scooter especially expensive to repair, or was I unlucky maybe the scooter got hit at a bad angle?
I was happy with the scooter before the accident, no complaints. I may buy another one in 2026. Anyone know what changes will be on the 2026 models?

Well, that might have caused any bike to be totaled.

But, yes, I think scooters are more likely to be totaled by insurance companies because scooters have more body plastic to replace, and because scooters are generally less expensive when new than a lot of regular bikes.

Glad you’re okay.

Yeah, today I learned how severe a 15mph collision can be. It is no faster than bicycle speed, but fast enough to total a bike and give me road rash if I was not wearing gear. I can't imagine what happens at 30/40/50mph.
Scooters are cheap, but BMWs are not. The C 400 GT MSRP is on par with motorcycles in the 300-400cc class, if not higher than average. No problem, I like BMW. I am not concerned about the $12k purchase price, but I am concerned about how easily this $12k asset can become $0.

glad you came away uninjured!

i hope you carry good insurance. in california progressive insurance offers "Total Loss Coverage: If your newer motorcycle is totaled in a covered accident, Progressive will pay the full MSRP for a new bike, minus your deductible. This is available for newer models and is sometimes called full value replacement." only cost me $25 extra per year.

it's a must for me every time i buy a new bike because insurance companies love to depreciate scooters faster than the speed of light.

From what I can see this was an aggressive action by the other driver as they knew you were there.

I can't prove it was intentional, but it would be either intentional or negligent. Negligence is still not an excuse. Insurnace also ruled the driver 100% at fault, so it will not go against my record.

Why weren't you in the driving/riding lane?
Out of habit, I guess. I probably passed by thousands of parked cars without incident this way. I didn't think much about it before, but since you asked:
  • Most bicycles here keep to the right lane, it is not only normal but expected. Sometimes I think of my scooter like an e-bike instead of a motorcycle.
  • There's little to no car traffic in the right lane (because they don't fit, unlike my scooter), which means less chance of being rear ended.
  • Not going to lie, speed is also part of it. I can get to my destination faster - without "cutting in line" (after all, it is a separate lane that would be otherwise unused).
We can certainly debate if doing this may be a bit risky. But to be clear, it is completely legal. It is also NOT lane splitting by definition, because once a vehicle is parked, it is no longer part of traffic, it becomes an obstacle, like a trafic cone. If there is a traffic cone blocking half a lane and I ride around it, no one would say that is lane splitting.
